Paper-cutting is a traditional Chinese culture. Paper-cutting is mostly used as a decoration, or an aesthetic way to express people’s wishes, gratitude and other emotions. The vividly depicted cuttings usually express wishes for a harvest, good fortunes, good health, happiness, and wealth.
In traditional Chinese culture, the more children, the more happiness. Fish is also selected as the symbol for happiness due to the capability of having lot of offspring. In this paper cutting, a woman just shopped some fish and went home under an umbrella. Can you tell there was a flower on her head? And can you recognize that she was wearing a coat with flowers and a corrugated skirt, and there were some fishes in the basket under her arm? This painting expresses the best wish for happiness.
About Tingting Su
In 2002, Tingting Su was admitted to Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University, one of the best colleges of art in China, where she majored in Ceramic Arts and Design. In Tsinghua, she expanded her knowledge on the history of Chinese art and foreign art, developed her skills on ceramic design as well as drawing, painting, paper cutting, and sculpture. She received her bachelor and master in fine arts in Tsinghua University. As a designer, she has won many awards for her ceramic design including 3rd and 2nd prize in the 13th and 14th Chinese contemporary ceramic exhibition, honorable mention of household porcelain competition of Shandong province.
